Lately, I have been reading a fabulous book for homeschoolers. This book is such a great help for homeschool parents who are looking struggling to stay on top of their lesson plans. It’s full of nuggets of helpful advice for those of us who are overwhelmed with just checking the next box in our planners.
What happens when life happens? What happens when you have a sick kiddo or a sick momma and can’t do school for a day or two? What happens when Junior struggles with a concept and the lessons need to slow down? What happens when Sally gets really passionate about a subject and really wants to dig deeper instead of moving on?
Are you going to move on for the sake of checking boxes, or are you going to set yourself up to have a flexible rhythm so that you and your kids can enjoy your homeschool experience?
Plan to Be Flexible
About the Book
Born out of one mom’s struggle to find order and peace, reading this book is like having a coffee with someone that’s “been there, done that.” Plan to Be Flexible’s focus on “rhythms” instead of a rigid schedule testifies to how free-form learning (and the realities of daily life) can happily co-exist within the framework of a goal-oriented plan. You will:* Analyze what’s working (and what’s not) in your homeschool* Develop a flexible and goal-oriented curriculum plan for each student* Discover why rhythms (not schedules) are the secret to homeschooling sanity* Learn how to homeschool with joy and freedomFull of practical ideas and real-life stories, this book is an incredible resource to establish the flexible, rhythm-based homeschooling lifestyle you and your family have been looking for!

My Thoughts
I’ve talked before about how structured I prefer to be. However, I am fully aware that life happens. As a matter of fact, life happened just last week. Emma woke up Tuesday with a raging fever and an ear ache. On Wednesday, she was diagnosed with strep. Thursday, she didn’t feel much better. Friday she was on the mend, but Isaac {my 16yo} had a doctor’s appointment mid-morning. Those four days shot my lesson plans, to-do lists, and everything else all to pieces. Thankfully, I have built in some ‘downtime’ in our school plans to accommodate sick days.
Last week, I talked about structure and flexibility in homeschool lesson plans. In that post, I mentioned a book that I am currently reading. Plan to Be Flexible: Designing A Homeschool Rhythm and Curriculum Plan That Works for Your Family by Alicia Kazsuk is such a great resource for homeschool mommas to have on hand.
Alicia talks about some of the same things I’ve touched on before on my other blog. Topics like evaluating what is and isn’t working in your homeschool. Homeschooling with freedom.
She writes about so much more! I have been on this homeschool journey for 13 years, and I am still learning things that will make the rest of our journey a better one. I can’t wait to implement some of Alicia’s suggestions starting with an end-of-the-year date so that we can evaluate our year together and talk about plans for next year.
I’m half-way through with the book, and I’m looking forward to reading the rest. There is so much wisdom packed into this one little book.
Whether you are new to homeschooling or you’ve been on this journey for a while like me, I recommend picking up a copy of Plan to Be Flexible for yourself. I guarantee you will find helpful advice for where ever you are on your homeschooling path.
**Note: I did NOT receive this book as a review item. I purchased it myself, and I’m sharing my thoughts with you.**
