When my kids were younger, they were huge fans of Veggie Tales. We sang the theme song at the grocery store. We listened to Silly Songs in the car. We watched the videos all.the.time. I loved how the Veggie Tales took classic Bible stories and told them in a way that stuck with my kids long after the video was over.
Recently, we had the opportunity to watch a video by Phil Vischer, the creator of Veggie Tales. Why Do We Call It Christmas? takes viewers beyond the Christmas story. Newsman Buck Denver sets out to tell us the story of Christmas. He dives into the meaning behind the Christmas traditions so many of us hold dear – chopping down trees, stockings, Santa Claus, and more. Then, he goes on to explain what each of these traditions has to do with celebrating the birth of Jesus.
Why Do We Call It Christmas?
We’ve added another movie to our Christmas video basket!
I thought this video might be a bit young for Emma {age 11}, but she enjoyed it. We love Christmas movies of all kinds, and this is one we really enjoyed together. Actually, I started watching it without her, and she got mad at me. So, we snuggled up and watched it together. We liked how Buck Denver went through the various myths and legends surrounding Christmas, and he explained what they have to do with the Christmas holiday that we celebrate.
Buck and the other characters explore things such as
- Why do we call it Christmas?
- Why do we celebrate on December 25?
- Who is Saint Nicholas?
Emma’s thoughts about the movie…
Some of the songs were a little silly, and I think younger kids would like them. But, I liked learning the reasons we do the things we do during Christmas. I’m glad we got to review this movie, and I will watch it again.
